Questions and Answers

What do you believe about the Bible?

We believe the Bible is one of many of the sacred books given to different people in different parts of the world at different times in history to help guide them through life. The Western Bible is an effective tool to help all people live ethical and "God-centered" lives.

Modern Bible scholarship has demonstrated that the Bible is not the absolute inerrarent word of God, but rather collection of human writings that can be used to inspire and enlighten. It is a road map to the Divine, it is not the territory itself.

What do you believe about Jesus?

We believe Jesus is the great example, not the exception We do not deny the divinity of Jesus, but affirm the divinity of all people. Jesus demonstrated how anyone of us may become a "Christ". Scripture quotes him as saying," What I do, you can do", and "It is not me, but the Father within me that does the work." God dwells within each person and works for all in the same way the God worked in Jesus. We are all children of God and potential Christs. Jesus shows the way for us.

What do you believe about heaven and hell?

We believe heaven and hell are states of mind not physical places. Hell is a sense of separation from God. We experience heaven to the degree we are able to become conscious of our unity with God.

What do you believe about Sin?

We believe a sin is simply a mistake. We are not punished for our sins, but by our sins. As long as we continue making mistakes, we continue to suffer the consequences of those mistakes. When we stop making those mistakes the suffering stops (our sins are forgiven automatically).

Religious Science and The Science of Mind

The purpose of the Church of Religious Science is to foster the teaching and practice of the Science of Mind. The Houston Center For Spiritual Living is a member church of the United Church of Religious Science, which is a global spiritual community composed of people pervasively caring for and about each other and the entire human family. Religious Science churches and communities are points of inspiration which bring the gift of compassion to the world.

Founder Ernest Holmes developed the Science of Mind as a spiritual teaching for the modern world. He defined it as "a correlation of the laws of science, the opinions of philosophy, and the revelations of religion as applied to the needs and aspirations of human kind." The Science of Mind is not personal revelation, but rather a uniting of the basic spiritual concepts which have been presented by the great spiritual teachers of all ages in a manner which is clear, concise and practical. There is a basic Truth that underlies all spiritual traditions. The Science of Mind removes all dogma and superstition so that the essential Truth of all religions may be revealed.

We are a faith, a philosophy and a way of life for the modern thinking spiritual seeker. We teach what the mystics and saints of all spiritual traditions have always taught:

There is a power for good in the universe, greater than you are, which you can use.

You create your life through the power of your thought, or as Jesus said,

" It is done unto you as you believe."

United Church of Religious Science experiences and manifests the truth of Oneness through the demonstration and development of Spiritual Community. We experience being one community with many locations.

The "glue" for our Spiritual Community is our shared commitment to spirituality, love, vision, community service, education, integrity, financial health, caring, and compassion. We make our decisions and guide our growth by continuous sensitivity to the unfolding vision of God for our community and by devotion to our shared values and guiding principles.

We convey a way of life based on spiritual practices that builds spiritual community globally. Every center, church or aspect of our Spiritual Community serves as a point of inspiration and dynamic influence for the vision of Global Heart, and we further express our vision through compassionate service to our members and to the world.
